2013’s Best Programming Languages

One of the most common questions posed by new students in computer science is, “What language should I learn?” The question has a complicated answer as different languages come with different capabilities and applications.

As cited on udemy.com, while some of them are commonly used in enterprise settings like Java, others are used for web apps like PHP. Here’s taking a look at eight of the most popular languages to be learned right away.

1. Java – This is an object-oriented programming language that was developed by Sun Micro systems in 1995. In less than two decades, Java is ranked among the best known programming languages in the world.

2. C Language – This is among the oldest programming languages that are being used today. The language was developed in 1972 by Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs. It is the godfather for most programming languages, that include Java, C#, C++, Perl and JavaScript.

3. c++ - This came into existence in 1983 for addressing drawbacks of the C language. The language is an intermediate-level language having object-oriented programming features. It is used in running many well-known desktop applications in the world, that include the total suite of Adobe software, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chromium, and Winamp.

4. C# - This was created by Microsoft in 2000 as a basic component of its .NET framework. This is an object-oriented, multi-paradigm programming language combining the best of C and C++. Acquiring skills in C# is essential for any programmer who would like to develop for Microsoft platforms that include Windows.

5. Objective-C – This was created in 1983 by Tom Love and Brad Cox at Apple for addressing the objected-oriented deficiencies of C language. It is the basic language used in Apple OS X and iOS operating systems. The increasing popularity of Macs and Apple “i’” devices have generated a great demand for Objective-C programmers.

6. PHP – This is a server-side scripting language powering over 244m websites in the online space. It encompasses the well-known publishing platforms - WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal. It was developed in 1995. PHP is easier to learn and to embedd within HTML pages making it the go-to general purpose programming language online.

7. Python – This was developed in 1991 by Guido van Rossum. It stresses readability and simplicity and is a good language for novices to begin their programming journey. It has become widely popular over the past few years and is powering some of the most popular websites globally like Instagram.com, Pinterest.com, and Rdio.com via its web framework, Django.

8. Ruby – It was created in 1995 by Yukihiro Matsumoto through a combination of elements from Perl, Lisp, and Eiffel. It is an object-oriented, dynamic language emphasizing simplicity and automation. It owers the Ruby on Rails framework used on well-known websites like Yammer, Scribd, Github, Groupon, and Shopify.
