Perceptive Pixel, Inc. was a company specializing in research, development and production of multi-touch interfaces. The company was founded in 2006 by Jeff Han, who publicly demonstrated multi-touch hardware and software technology at the TED conference earlier that year. Perceptive Pixel was headquartered in New York City and maintained offices in Mountain View, Portland, and Washington D.C. The company was acquired by Microsoft in July 2012.
The company shipped their first Multi-Touch Workstation and larger Multi-Touch Collaboration Wall in 2007 and gained widespread recognition for transforming the way CNN covered the 2008 US Presidential elections. In 2009, the Smithsonian awarded Perceptive Pixel the National Design Award in the inaugural category of Interaction Design.
Perceptive's technology is used in broadcast, defense, geo-intelligence, energy exploration, industrial design and medical imaging.
On July 9, 2012, during Microsoft's WPC 2012 Conference, Steve Ballmer announced that they had acquired the company.On July 31, 2012, Microsoft completed their acquisition of Perceptive Pixel. Steve Ballmer stated the company hoped to use the technology to enhance its Windows 8 operating system.
